Myrtle Beach Hosts The 36th Annual World Amateur Handicap Championship

When it comes to golf, the more the merrier. And no place is merrier than Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the World Amateur Handicap Championship, the largest golf tournament on the planet.

With the 36th Annual World Am set for Aug. 26-30, more than 3,200 golfers of all ages and skill levels will descend on Myrtle Beach to battle it out on the Grand Strand’s world-famous courses.

Open to scratch golfers and as high as 36-handicappers, the World Am levels the playing field for everyone to compete for the title of world champion, and for all participants to have a blast.

Featuring play on 60 award-winning layouts along the 60-mile stretch of Carolina coastline that is renowned for golf, the World Am provides the perfect proving ground for aces and hacks alike.

Each flight will play four rounds at some of the most exclusive courses on the Grand Strand, followed by fun evenings at the World’s Largest 19th Hole at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The world’s biggest gathering of golfers also calls for the world’s biggest golf party, and the 19th Hole lives up to the billing. Featuring four nights of free food prepared by some of the best restaurants on the Grand Strand and a four open bars serving beer, wine, liquor and non-alcoholic drinks, the 19th Hole is the hot spot for feasting after a long day on the links and talking golf with old and new friends over a few drinks. The Golf Expo includes a wide variety of vendors and exhibitions where visitors can pick up golf gear, gadgets and tips from the pros.

The World’s Largest 19th Hole offers four nights of free entertainment and celebrity guest speakers as part of the World Am LIVE! program, including local bands and performers from Myrtle Beach’s vibrant theater scene. Visitors can also fill their need for competition at the indoor par-3 layout, the 60-foot putting challenge, and a game room with Golden Tee machines, golf simulators, corn hole boards and other amusements. There are nightly giveaways, and all participants are automatically entered in a drawing for a chance to win the grand prize of $25,000.

But the main draw to the World Am is the golf, and lots of it. All net and gross division golfers play 72 holes at different courses in the Myrtle Beach area, with the winners from each flight advancing to Friday’s championship round. The top five players in each flights receive a trophy or gift cars, and there are daily awards for low net, long drive, closest-to-the-pin and more. The championship rounds are flighted by age, handicap and gender, with an expected 400 female participants making the World Am the largest women’s golf tournament in the world, as well.
