What do you get when you combine two golf stars and technology?
If those stars are Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the result is TMRW Sports. (It’s pronounced “tomorrow sports.”) The tech-centric company brings together entertainment, media, and sports into a new venture. Mike McCarley, former president of NBC Sports Golf, is also a co-founder.
“For the last few years, I’ve focused on helping to lead golf into its digital future,” McIlroy said in a release. “We can shape the way media and technology improve the sports experience.”
TMRW Sports’ future venue site will be in Palm Beach, Fla., centered on Palm Beach State College. TMRW will offer a program of educational and professional growth to the community. That’s also where its first project, TGL, will begin to play in 2024.
TGL is a high-tech golf league with PGA Tour support. The plan is for primetime play at a brand-new venue on campus. Besides the league, the school will have other benefits:
From the start of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, there has been division. LIV, a rival pro tour that has divided allegiances among the world’s leading players, debuted in 2022. Major players have signed on and closed the door on their PGA Tour careers in the process.
Both Woods and McIlroy remain supporters of the PGA Tour and are now working together.
It’s not McIlroy’s first foray into the digital side of sports. With McCarley, he developed GolfPass, a digital membership site. Members get access to his golf tips and peek behind the scenes into McIlroy’s life.
NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol has invested, too. The venture seeks to give people more access to sports, says Woods.
“People I meet from all walks of life share our passion for sports,” Woods said. “But they also share our desire to build a better future for the next generation of sports fans. Together, we can harness technology to bring fresh approaches to the sports we love.”
Word emerged in August that McIlroy and Woods had something brewing. Their idea: to bring together top golfers to play in a non-grass stadium environment. All with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan’s approval.
TMRW Sports will announce more investors and projects soon. Other prominent figures involved in the project include:
