How to prep yourself for winter golf

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

How cold is too cold to golf?

That’s a trick question. It really depends on the golfer. When vacationers pack their clubs and head to Myrtle Beach in the off-season, they know chances are great that Carolina blue sky will welcome them.

Air temperatures, though? Even with that famous Myrtle Beach sun, winter days can get nippy. In December, highs can still reach about 60, which is downright tropical for some of our northern neighbors. Even in January and February, highs stick around the mid- to upper-50s, but lows can dip into the 30s, making early (or late-day rounds) a bit challenging at times.

We’ll let you in on a few tips for winter golf. With a little prep work and caution, you can enjoy the links in much the same way you did when you visited in spring and summer. Plus, we’ll tell you about some terrific golf specials available from area resorts to make that winter jaunt to the coast even more enticing. As though you needed an excuse. Golf in Myrtle Beach can be a year-round endeavor.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”64775″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Why do golfers play in winter?

Because they can. Ever watched a British Open? You’ve probably seen some pretty rough conditions, with rain, wind, and chill. It’s not often like that in Myrtle Beach. Cold and rain have a tendency to slow the ball and cut travel distance. Your score might not be pretty, so set your pride to the side and just have a blast playing the sport you love.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]How to enjoy winter golf in Myrtle Beach

  1. Equip yourself

Anything waterproof will be an asset. Warm golf gloves are good but don’t be afraid to also bring wooly mittens and a comfy toboggan. Hand warmers are essential, either the shake-and-use type or this style of warmer, by Titleist. The comfier you are, the better.

Pro tip: Wear a thermal layer under your golf clothes to keep toasty warm on your round.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

  1. Tee off at the right time

With sunset earlier during the winter, it’s not easy to get a full round in with a late afternoon tee time. Book a time around 1 p.m. to give yourself plenty of opportunities to finish. Also, the temperatures will be at or near the high for the day at midday.

Pro tip: If possible, bypass the cart and carry your clubs in the winter for a bit of a workout.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

  1. Choose apparel wisely

Wool socks can block out the chill and protect your feet against unexpected water play and frosty dew. A soft and breathable quarter-zip jacket can keep out the chill, and it easy to remove if you get warm. Infrared golf pants are marvelously engineered for cold weather play.

Pro tip: Pick an extra layer of cold protection, like this Under Armor golf jacket.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

  1. Fuel yourself well

Winter golf nutrition is a lot like it would be for any outing. Whole-wheat foods are optimal, such as oatmeal, pasta, and toast. Lean proteins, such as chicken, eggs, and red meat labeled loin or round, are essential. Wrap it up with fruits and green vegetables.

Pro tip: Have your pre-round meal 2-3 hours before tee time. Snack an hour before you play.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
