MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - If you were golfing in Myrtle Beach today, you have issues. Not that you couldn't have logged 18 soggy, windy holes while your vehicle moved a mile an hour. But get a grip - this isn't "Caddyshack," and you weren't having the best round of your life.
We here at Myrtlebeachgolf.com hope you are safely tucked away in Charlotte or some inland hideaway. Good Lord willing, there may even be a decent track there. OK, we're perverse.
But when Floyd finishes punishing the Grand Strand, and Gert hopefully misses Myrtle Beach like stray approach shot, there will be golf to be played. And if Belle Terre is topping your list of post hurricane outings, then be weary of the deceptive gail force power of the signature 14th hole.
The Hole: The 14th Hole at Belle Terre - a 161 yard par-3.
Architect: Rees Jones
The Layout: The 14th hole is a deceptively long par-3, in that it plays slightly uphill. An environmentally protected wildlife area sits between tee and green, gobbling up any duffed or topped tee shot. A greenside bunker protects the left side of the green, with a right side that is slightly safer.
The Strategy: Is as simple as it gets according to Head
Pro Todd Houser. "Just hit it in the middle of the green, there
is no science to it," says Houser. Well, aren't we trying to
do that on every hole in theory?
The Average Golfer: Needs to be painfully aware of how he or she handles an uphill long iron shot, because that is essentially what you have with the 14th hole.
Don't Play: Anything short. There may be no real water, but the ball is out of play in the environmentally protected area between the tee and green.
Play the Hole: In the late afternoon, according to Houser. The sky often takes on a pink hue with the lowcountry clouds hovering above.
