The Breakers Resort Breaks On Through

Paradise Tower provides Grand Strand with unprecedented luxury accommodations

By Shane Sharp, Senior Editor

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – If one resort is successfully debunking the Grand Strand’s reputation as a mecca for bare bones, seaside motels, it has to be The Breakers. The venerable Myrtle Beach resort just opened its much-anticipated Paradise Tower, bringing its room tally up to 500, and firmly cementing its place as the Strand’s most luxurious stay-and-play facility.

“It is hard to believe that we started 70 years ago, as a cottage hotel,” says Hotel Manager Kay Harris. “We have guests that have been staying with us for 30 plus years, and generation after generation keeps coming in. With the golfers, its the same thing, in that they come back year after year because we provide them with the service and tools they need for a one-of-a-kind golf vacation.”

Those tools include The Breakers Resort, the North Tower, and the new Paradise Tower, and the service entails employees that know your by name by the time you leave for your first 18 holes.

But it’s the little things that keep golfers coming back to The Breakers: the famous, all-you-can eat breakfast buffet, a welcome packet that includes coupons for local stores, the post-trip golf gifts of logo hats, shirts, and balls, and the family oriented atmosphere.

“You are getting so much more than just a room here,” Harris says. “You are getting an experience. People come back for that experience.”

With the addition of the Paradise Tower, that experience now includes a 418-foot lazy river, plush one, two, and three bedroom suites, one of the largest pools on the beach, an ocean front water park and a Kiddie Activity Center.

Harris says that despite the Paradise Tower’s overwhelming array of amenities, thousands of The Breakers' loyal patrons have affinities for the other facilities.

“Some want to stay at the Resort Hotel, because that is where they have always stayed,” Harris says. “They may be used to the annex building, with its three stories and open walkways. Others got used to the North Tower, and its amenities, so they want to stay there.”

The Breakers Resort Indeed, there is something for everyone at The Breakers. The Resort Hotel houses both rooms and suites, the North Tower has rooms, suites, and condo-style units, and the Paradise Tower features one, two and three bedroom luxury suites.

So you can hole up in a room by yourself, turn down the air conditioner, and relax with a movie, or you can grab a three-bedroom unit for six golfers and hunker down for some late-night poker games.

“There are lots of golfers that want to stay on the beach, and not on a golf course,” Harris says. “They spend all day on the course, and then they want to be close to the water, or to the nightlife of the beach.”

The Breakers has been building affordable, efficient and enjoyable golf packages for Grand Strand visitors for years. The golf department is staffed with receptionists that have a working knowledge of nearly every course in the area, and golf clerks are available to provide guests with specific course recommendations based on difficulty, scenery, designer preferences, and other criteria.

The Breakers Resort The Breakers also offers a variety of packages ranging from middle of the week bargains to weekend excursions on the Strand’s premier layouts. All packages are custom built, and price sensitive to the time of year and day of the week. The resort is also one of only seven local hotels to have an agreement with the prestigious Dunes Golf and Beach Club – one of the Strand’s oldest and most sought after golf courses.

For years, golfers have capped the day with a visit to the “Top of the Green” Lounge, perched on the rooftop of the Resort Hotel. The Breakers also houses full-scale restaurants at the Paradise and North Towers, as well as a pool bar that is open for lunch and dinner at the Paradise Tower.

“People say they stay here because of the people that work here,” Harris says. “They feel like they get customized service, and that we go out of the way to make them happy. If you want the top of the line in service and accommodations, you can get it here. With the new tower, you can stay at the most luxurious place in Myrtle Beach.”
