Flo’s Place
in Murrells Inlet

By Shane Sharp, Contributing Writer

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. -- Bon Apetit and Laissez Bon Temp Rouller …

“Eat well and let the good times roll” is the motto at Flo’s Place in Murrells Inlet, and both of these goals are achieved with ease at this South Strand staple for Cajun grub. Flo’s has graced the shores of the Inlet for 21 years, and within the friendly confines of this rustic edifice, not much has changed.

The appetizers are straight from the Bayou, the entrees will stick to your ribs, and the hospitality and service are southern with a splash of the Big Easy.

If you are heading south on Highway 17 from Myrtle Beach, Flo’s Place will be one of the first restaurants you encounter after taking a left on Business 17 towards the Inlet. The setting is pure Low Country, with views of the coastal marshes and the Garden City hotel skyline.

“You don’t come here for the frills, you come here for the food and the folks,” says one waitress who is chatting up some golfers at the bar.

The food at Flo’s is always succulent and is a welcome departure from the Grand Strand’s standard seafood offerings. Appetizers include Crab Cakes, Alligator Fritters, Cajun Oysters, and Fish Chowder. Flo’s most famous offering, Cajun fried pickles, is the most popular appetizer on this day, and the servers bring them out in droves.

“These little guys are addictive,” says one elderly golfer.

Flo’s patio, which features an old concrete bar, plenty of tables and views out onto Inlet, is a popular hang out for golfers and locals. But step inside and you are surrounded by Flo’s signature decoration – the hat.

That’s right, over 3000 lids hang from the walls and the ceilings. Legend has it that Flo herself just started stealing them off patron’s heads. Now visitor’s gladly donate their favorite caps for enshrinement in the restaurant’s gallery.

“We’ve got foam ones, old ones, new ones, and some hats that don’t belong anywhere but in the garbage but we’ll hang them all,” says one eccentric looking woman who claims to be, or not be Flo -- depending on who’s asking.

Get past the hats and through your appetizer and its time to get down to the business at hand - supper. There are plenty of raw bar offerings like boiled shrimp, oysters on the half shell and crab legs. One popular entrée is the “Dunkin Pot”, a feast for two that includes oysters, clams, shrimp, potatoes, sausage and shellfish served in a huge iron kettle with garlic bread and dipping sauce. At $43.95, the Dunkin Pot doesn’t come cheap, but its worth every last penny.

The house specialties are the most popular items on the menu, according to the woman who may or may not be Flo. With offerings like blackened Grouper, Shrimp Creole, Red Beans and Rice with Sausage and Seafood Gumbo, its no wonder these items appeal to our yankee friends.

This hungry golfer, all burned out on seafood, opted for the red beans and rice, despite the seemingly steep price tag of $13.95. The sausage was savory and tender, and the beans were cooked just right – not too tender and not too crunchy.

Flo also serves up ribeye steaks and grilled or sautéed seafood platters ($13.95 - $17.95). The stuffed crab and the clamstrip platters are available in fried only fashion, but are worth the additional artery clog.

If you want to keep it on the down low, or if you’re watching your girly figure, Flo has plenty of sandwiches and salads to choose from. Poorboys are the most popular selection, and include Shrimp, Oysters, Crab Cake, Fish and Steak and Cheese. Salads are served few and far between, but the Hot Sliced Chicken Salad ($8.25) is a popular choice among land lubbers.

Plenty of cold beer is available to quell the fires of Flo’s spicy Cajun concoctions, including Dixie Beer, which the menu points out is imported “all the way from New Orleans.”
