Thistle Golf Club in Sunset Beach, N.C., just a short drive up the coast from Myrtle Beach, is like taking a trip back in time and place to the early 1800s in Scotland, the birthplace of golf.

This tradition-rich links layout features 27 holes of mounded fairways, deep bunkers, natural water hazards and waste areas that must be traversed to reach the well-manicured, bentgrass greens.

The course is a perfect marriage of the man-made and the natural, with pristine wetlands, maritime forests and wildlife blending with the landscape of lovely bridges and a new clubhouse inspired by an ancient Scottish castle.

Rated as a 4.5-star course by Golf Digest, Thistle has become very popular among golfers of all skill levels. In addition to a memorable round of golf in a beautiful setting, the authentic Scottish pub is one of the best 19th holes on the Grand Strand.

Art (Wilmington, DE) - Range balls were provided. The new clubhouse is very impressive. We played Stewart/MacKay (South/West). The new names of each 9 are traditional Scottish names, not named after golfers we know. West is now MacKay, North is now Cameron and South is now Stewart and the three 9's are played in that order. The Stewart/MacKay combo is the most interesting combo of the 27 holes and these two 9's compete for the most difficult 9 at Thistle. There is little housing, the bent greens were perfect, fairways plush, service great and the 12-minute tee times provide a nice pace of play. If Thistle can do all of this, as a standalone course, then other equal/higher priced courses don?t have an excuse when they can?t. - 05/15/2012 - 10
