- Northerners and southerners have different definitions of the 90 degree rule. In the north, it means into the fairway at 90 degrees, then out of the fairway, down the path and back in at 90 degrees, if necessary. In the south, it means in at 90 degrees and proceed down the fairway. That is 90 degrees at Pawleys. It is not "excessive" at all.
