MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. - Arrowhead assistant pro Scott Devaux knows his nines. And he should - Scott plays some part and parcel of Arrowhead's 27 holes almost everyday. In fact, rare are the days that Devaux strays from this borderline brilliant Tom Jackson/Ray Floyd layout.

And like someone who plays a course day in and day out, Devaux has his takes on the lay of the land. Live and uncensored, here are SD's takes on the Cypress, Lake and Waterway Courses at the Arrowhead Country Club.

MB.com: Which of the nines is the most challenging?

SD: Cypress is the most challenging nine - it is definitely the most difficult of the three. If you can get through the first four holes, you are fine. The water is so intimidating; if you make one mistake it will lead to double bogey.

Cypress is also the most private of the nine. There are only a few homes, once you get to the 8th hole. Cypress also has our most scenic hole, the par-5, 2nd hole. It requires two shots over water - it is tough.

MB.com: I want to make sure that I play on the most scenic of the nines. Which course do I make sure to schedule?

SD: Waterway. Waterway is the most scenic of the three. The 5th hole runs right along the Intracoastal Waterway.

MB.com: What is up with the Lake Course? Is it the redheaded stepchild?

SD: No. Not at all. The Lake course features a lot of doglegs, more rolling fairways and lots of hills and moguls. There is a lot of water, but that goes for all three nines. There are not a lot of forced carries because most of the water is left and right of the holes.

MB.com: So which set of nines are usually paired to make up an 18-hole round?

SD: Which set of nines you play is generally up to maintenance. We usually have two nines open in the morning, but all three are open in the afternoon for play.

MB.com: What if you play 18-holes and then want to dig on the odd nine out?

SD: In the summertime, we have a 9-hole replay for $10. Our year round replay is only $18.

MB.com: Who actually designed the course? The official architect of record is Tom Jackson, but your website gives a whole lot of credit to Ray Floyd.

SD: They both did a lot of collaboration on the course. Jackson is really the architect, but Floyd provided input on every hole.

MB.com: Thanks Scott. By the way, I feel better knowing that you also lost all your Titleists on the first four holes of Cypress. Oops…did I say that out loud?
